About Me:

When I was eight years old, I submitted a song to Music Makers magazine- and they actually published it! I was ecstatic. This introduced me to a world of possibilities. I was captivated by the idea of exchanging ideas through the written word. After that, I won a state-wide essay competition in the sixth grade. I was on a roll!

Fast forward to college, when an English professor informed me that I wouldn’t make a great writer because I didn’t have anything interesting to say. This stopped me short. I disagreed. I think that everybody has interesting things to say, including me! But I realized that if words don’t resonate with the reader, the wrong assumptions are made about the ideas. If a writer wants to get her ideas across, she has to use words that her readers understand.

One of my first writing jobs was creating clue-based games for a murder mystery party website. Because of the constant interactions with the customers, this was an excellent way to figure out how to write clearly for an audience. I also learned how to write creatively under a deadline.

I’ve been a member of the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators since 2002. I truly enjoy both technical and creative writing. Creativity makes technical writing more interesting to read. Technicality makes creative writing feel more credible.

I collect maps of destinations you’d explore in children’s literature.

If I lived in a perfect world, I’d spend a lot more time rock climbing. Don’t love it ‘til you try it.
